When Do You Need A Children’s Podiatrist?

If you’re concerned about your child’s feet, a children’s podiatrist should be able to help. Problems with the feet should be checked as soon as possible, in order to prevent further issues in the future.

What Does A Children’s Podiatrist Do?

Whether you are worried about the development of your child’s feet, or they have suffered an injury or a common foot issue such as verrucae, a podiatrist is skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of problems with the feet and lower limbs.

A podiatrist is specially trained in all areas of foot health, including children’s development.

How Can I Tell If A Visit Is Necessary?

Although sometimes it will be obvious that a visit to a podiatrist is needed – for example, if your child is suffering with verrucas or ingrowing toenails, occasionally it will be less obvious and it’s important to look out for these clues:

  • Struggling to keep up

If your child has frequent difficulties in keeping up with you or their peers, there may be an issue with their feet that should be investigated.

  • Lack of arches

Although having a lack of arches – or flat feet – is common and usually nothing to worry about, it is important to keep an eye on this. Most children develop arches by around six years old. If your child hasn’t by then, and experiences other problems such as problems walking, it is a good idea to visit a podiatrist.

  • Tripping

While it is certainly not unusual for children to trip over, if they fall frequently then it may be a sign that there is an issue with their balance.

The children’s podiatrist will be able to diagnose problems and put together a treatment plan. For example, this could be special orthotics or a series of exercises.

The important thing to remember is that a podiatrist is available for any concerns. As with a dentist, it is important to have regular checkups to avoid any future problems.

How To Choose A Children’s Podiatrist

When you are looking for a podiatrist, it is important to ensure that they are registered with the Health & Care Professions Council. You can check their register online here. All podiatrists have to be registered with the HCPC in order to practice.

You will also find that some practices have been awarded Accredited Practice status from the College of Podiatry. This can give you the confidence that the practice is functioning to the highest standards. At Northwich Foot Clinic, all of our clinicians are highly qualified and recognised experts.
